In August it will be 15 years since, almost at dawn after a gafieira at Estudantina, exactly at the Bar das Putas, Claudinha Goes and Julio Braga looked at each other and decided to offer me a free radio program. I, Conrad Rose, nicknamed Siri, selected some samba cds and listened to them on a diskman all the way to Praia Vermelha for the first program, when the song Muqueca de Siri by Pelado da Mangueira played in a compilation that I had on shuffle. The name of the program was decided. It feels like yesterday and it thrills me to remember.
A decade and a half of daring connections that, with the support of many important people in the early days of the internet, traveled the world presenting Brazilian music in an unconventional and always surprising way. In the early years, the repertoire was reserved for research only on samba and its precursors such as choro, maxixe, jongo, lundu and cateretê. In this format, Muqueca de Siri was named by the APCA as the best podcast of the year 2007.
Today, the program is recorded and broadcast live by community radio, at a frequency and time allowed by Brazilian law.
All this time, the program has been done on an unpaid basis directly, with each episode departing from the rights contained in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and hosted in an ad-free environment with no limits or cost for downloading or listening. The sensitivity and care in selecting the repertoire, however, provided opportunities for work related to sound projects for establishments or specific events, automation of sound content, construction of webradios, participation in academic and public events on communication and many other audiovisual activities.
Starting in 2020 and then with the onset of the pandemic, these activities became scarce or disappeared. As with so many other activities, the flow of projects stagnated and Muqueca de Siri was maintained in the resistance. The schedule on Rádio Campeche was maintained with reruns of episodes recorded between 2018 and 2019 that were programmed remotely until October 2020, when the program returned to being recorded live. Now, in 2021, Muqueca de Siri has been rebroadcast to Barcelona by Radio Bronka.
Now it is time to actually resume activities and start planning for when the population in general is vaccinated. For that, we need to renew or recover our equipment and, mainly, keep the studio up and running to continue producing quality sound content and using free software.
Yes, this post celebrates 15 years of resistance and good music; but, more than commemorating, this post is also to ask for your help, you the listener, to ask you to contribute any amount that you can to help in the rebuilding of this channel.
And hopefully, once everyone is immunized, Muqueca de Siri can occupy bandstands again with the most fragrant jukebox in the world.
